individual therapy

Individual psychotherapy is a space to share your personal thoughts, feelings and problems in a safe and confidential way. Together we will explore ways to improve your quality of life, overcome challenges and achieve psychological balance. The therapeutic process focuses on promoting personal growth, understanding yourself and finding more effective ways to deal with stress, anxiety or other difficulties.

WHO IS INDIVIDUAL PSYCHOTHERAPY SUITABLE FOR?

Individual psychotherapy is for anyone who wants to address, for example:

  • Anxiety and long-term stress
  • Depression and feelings of exhaustionLow self-esteem and problems with self-acceptance
  • Traumatic experiences or personal losses
  • Relationship problems (personal and professional)
  • Challenging life changes and crises
  • Personal growth and the search for meaning in life

HOW DOES AN INDIVIDUAL SESSION WORK?

Sessions usually last 50 minutes and are focused on your specific needs. During therapy we explore patterns of thinking, behaviour and experience together. The goal may not only be to address current issues, but also to achieve long-term personal growth. The frequency of sessions depends on your individual needs and goals. Initially, I most often have sessions with clients once a week, which is ideal to maintain continuity and increase effectiveness. With some clients, the frequency may be less (e.g., once every 14 days). With some, we have arranged to meet once a month because we are pursuing a longer-term goal that requires a longer period of time.

WHAT THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES DO I USE?

In individual psychotherapy, I combine several therapeutic approaches that I tailor to your specific needs. My primary approach is Systemic Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy but I also draw inspiration from CBT, Narrative Therapy, and Gestalt Therapy.

FAQ

The first session of psychotherapy serves to get to know each other. You will get to know what brought you to me and we will talk about whether it is possible to work together, whether I can offer you what you are looking for. We agree on the course of future meetings and frequency together.

I will always try to ensure that we agree a goal for the meeting and then throughout the service we will reflect together on how the work together is going, how the change you are seeking is manifesting.

Yes, I recognise that the first session can be challenging for clients and I approach it as such.

The meeting is voluntary and you can end it at any time. If you are unsure if I can offer what you need, say so. I always appreciate honesty and openness. We can work through this and I may be able to refer you to a colleague or other service if appropriate.

If you decide to work with me, I’ll send you an introductory email that clearly explains how things work when working with me.

Insureds of selected health insurance companies have the option to have part of the cost of psychotherapeutic consultations reimbursed by their health insurance company.

I am listed by all health insurance companies in the area of preventive programs as a recognized therapist to provide the service. Yes, and it’s not at all unusual, I regularly have longer sessions with some clients (e.g. 75 minutes). Longer sessions can be useful for deeper work on more complex topics.

The length of the therapeutic process is very individual and depends on the nature of the problem you are experiencing. Short-term therapy may last a few months, while long-term therapy may continue for several years if deeper issues or personal development are being addressed. Together we regularly assess progress and decide on the way forward.

If you need to discontinue therapy for any reason, it is important to inform in a timely manner. Ideally, we would plan together how to end or temporarily interrupt the therapeutic process. Discontinuing therapy can be part of your development and you can return whenever you need to.

At the same time, it is good to mention that I have many clients who are traveling abroad for work. In that case, we move to an online environment and vary between online therapy and face-to-face sessions.

In therapy, you can address a wide range of problems. Sometimes clients tell me they feel bad that what they’re dealing with is such a small thing. I don’t think something is a small thing if it’s bothering you. On the contrary, I’m glad that you allow yourself to talk about it and that’s the first step towards change.

But to give you examples – with clients we address anxiety, depression, stress, relationship issues, burnout, self-acceptance issues, personal development, trauma, loss of meaning in life…

Other topics include job fit, career direction, compulsive thoughts, repetitive patterns in relationships, climatic grief, eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, orthodoxy,…), imposter syndrome, FOMO,…

Therapy is there to help you process, understand and find solutions to what is troubling or burdening you in your life.

You don’t have to wait until the problem is “serious enough” – anything that is important to you is appropriate to address in therapy sessions. Therapy is designed to help you gain insight, support and tools for coping with situations that are troubling you.

Yes, complete confidentiality is the foundation of the therapeutic relationship and I am particularly keen on it. All topics you open in therapy are protected by confidentiality. Your personal information and the information you share is not shared with third parties without your explicit consent, except in situations provided by law (e.g., imminent danger to self or others).

Protecting your personal information and confidentiality is an absolute priority for me. In the context of individual psychotherapy, I ensure that any information you share is as secure as possible.

I keep therapy notes in an encrypted digital environment that is protected against unauthorized access.

When it comes to online therapy sessions, I use FaceTime and Google Meet platforms for video calls, which also meet modern encryption standards and ensure secure transmission of information. These platforms protect your privacy and ensure that the content of our calls is not accessible to third parties.

My goal is to ensure that all aspects of our communication and therapeutic process are fully confidential and secure.

No, it is not necessary to have a doctor’s referral to start psychotherapy. You can contact me directly to arrange an initial consultation. However, if you have more serious mental health problems or are taking medication, working with a psychiatrist or doctor may be appropriate.

If you find that the therapy or my therapeutic approach does not suit you, it is important to communicate this openly. Therapy is collaborative and if you are not feeling progress, we can consider a change in approach together or I will be happy to recommend another therapist.

No, as a psychotherapist, I’m not authorized to issue sick leave. This can only be done by doctors (GPs, specialists or hospital doctors). As a rule, my clients choose morning, lunch or early evening appointments. Some employers encourage mental hygiene, in which case you should check with your employer to see what their terms and conditions are.

Yes, I’m working with Benefity and with Benefity plus.
